The Dead Weather go down a storm in Glasgow
Jack and the gang are on form
Glastonbury weekend can often give bands the chance to lump in a few extra shows around the UK to earn some extra cash for the pot and this was the thinking behind the appearance of The Dead Weather in Glasgow.
A Saturday showing at the famous festival allowed the band to trek up to Scotland on the Sunday evening and we can only say we are glad they did. We aren’t the biggest fans of Glastonbury but if it played a part in this show going ahead, cheers Michael and Emily!
Some would say that having Jack White on drums rather than up front on guitar is a decision akin to sticking Stevie Gerrard out on the left wing. It keeps him involved but by God, it’s not the best use of his talents. Thankfully, gigs are not played on paper as the tight four piece proved themselves to have no weak link at all and you never missed White’s guitar.
This was down to the playing style and frenetic fingers of Dean Fertita, who you may know from the Queens of The Stone Age. It made no difference if Fertita was playing guitar or the synthesizer, he was at the heart of everything the band did, rarely hogging the spotlight but always being heavily involved.
White must know that when he is at the back on drums if the guitarist wasn’t cutting the mustard there would be complaints about the decision but there have been very few grumbles about the White Stripes man taking a backseat.
With Jack Lawrence, with an interesting Charles Manson style beard turning in another solid performance which can only be described as being ‘Jack Lawrence’, you don’t have to worry about the bottom end of the performance. Lawrence is hardly an under-rated bass player but you get the impression he doesn’t receive the praise he is due, no doubt in part to his more famous bandmates getting the adulation.
Which leaves us with Alison Mosshart, and her evolution to full blown rock n roll frontperson is surely complete. We are big fans of The Kills, have been since the initial EP and always rated Mosshart. Her performance with the group ups everything though.
Perhaps with the full band around her, her confidence has soared to the level that allows her prowl the stage, safe in the knowledge that she owns it. Maybe it is the fact that The Dead Weather is still viewed as a side project which gives her the confidence to grab the crowd’s attention but whatever the reason, we like it.
Stand out tracks include ‘Blue Blood Blues’, ‘Hustle and Cuss’ and ‘The Difference Between Us’, the opening three songs from the abnds second album ‘Sea of Cowards’ whilst debut album ‘Horehound’ had its moments with ‘Hang you From The Heavens’ and ‘I Cut Like A Buffalo’ excelling.
There wasn’t a bad song all night though as once again Jack White turns up trumps but the praise should go to the entire band.
We’ll have a couple more videos from The Dead Weather gig online soon but we hope you enjoy these for now!
