Low will be The Great Destroyer at Primavera
We pray we don’t go deaf before this set
The news that Low are appearing at the Primavera festival is great news and the further announcement that they will be playing ‘The Great Destroyer’ record in its entirety is brilliant, if not a little strange.
The album is only going to be five years old this year and Low are still a going concern. ‘Drums and Guns’ may not have impressed as many people as their first venture into the world of amps and volume but it has a number of good tunes. We wouldn’t have minded hearing ‘Belarus’, ‘Dragonfly’ and ‘Hatchet’ amongst others.
However, we are now going to stop moaning as we absolutely adore ‘The Great Destroyer’, in fact, when asked by the Room13 website, one of our writers declared it as his album of the decade.
It earned the accolade by combining melody with forceful yet beautiful music. In brief, the album had the lot.
With songs like ‘California’, ‘Monkey’, ‘Just Stand Back’, ‘When I Go Deaf’, ‘Death of A Salesman’ and ‘Walk Into The Sea‘, it is no wonder why it is held as an immense album.
The pop songs, the introspective songs, the shouting from the rooftop songs and it mentioned monkeys – hard to see what else we could ask for?
And then, the announcement of Alan Sparhawk’s breakdown came to the fore and the album started to fit together more cohesively than ever before.
The lyrics of releasing the pressure, starting again, lashing out and contemplating the end of it all should have been fairly obvious from the start. Perhaps that is just the nature of lyrics, they can say one thing to one person or at one time but when you find out other information, the whole picture can change.
We are massively looking forward to seeing Low playing this set, roll on May.
