Kill Chris Moyles and save 6Music
It’s not too much to ask for is it?
When we say kill Chris Moyles we would like to say that we don’t mean kill him as in murder him but kill off his show and free him from his contract.
However, this is untrue; the thought of a killing spree bumping off the rotund person who sometimes plays music around unfunny skits doesn’t exactly fill us with dread.
The sums allegedly work out at:
It would cost around £6m to fund 6Music for a year.
Moyles has a salary of £6.3m each year.
You can see why people are making an easy link here? If the BBC need to make huge savings, get rid of Moyles because lets face it, will anyone miss him?
Yes, he has a lot of listeners, in his mind, he is the genuine saviour of Radio 1 but wherever you flick through on the radio dial, you will find a Moyles a-like, sat with his unfunny compadres and playing music that no one really loves but well, its inoffensive innit?
Every commercial radio station can provide an unfunny host with a mainstream taste in music, if there is any reason for the BBC to exist it is to provide an alternative to the watered down, meanstream funnelled nonsense that exists on commercial radio stations.
Have a look at the list of shows on 6Music, look at the variety that is available there.
Documentaries and niche music shows that aren’t readily available or easily accessible for people and yet, surely that is what the BBC should be looking out for. The BBC allegedly still have a remit to educate, inform and entertain the nation but maybe not – maybe it is just to make money?
The remit for 6Music is available here and is a very interesting and outlines why it would be a big loss if it goes.
Commercial radio stations have their uses and their audience, so don’t think we are criticising them but they aren’t for us.
However, as they are mainly funded under their own steam and advertising, they cause us no problems.
The argument will run that 6Music has less listeners than Chris Moyles and therefore, keeping him on board represents better value to more people. It is not a fair fight though. Not everyone has access to digital radio stations and the advertising for Moyles greatly outstrips the promotion of 6Music.
Hopefully this news can spur some life into listeners and perhaps buy it some extra time to develop its audience before it’s too late. In the grand scheme of things, the BBC pisses away so much money on rubbish its unreal. And it’s almost sickening to think that they think its better to wipe out an entire channel’s worth of alternative and at times innovative shows than to set free some of the fat cats and over-rated has been’s on their roster.
If you haven’t listened to 6Music, get onto the website and have a look about and see what you think. It may not be for you, thats alright but at least give it a try.
And if you listen to Moyles, please stop, we say this for your benefit, not ours!
We would also like to say that The Asian Network is being placed in the same situation as 6Music and the arguments for prolonging 6Music are as valid for that network. It provides a service that does not get covered elsewhere. We admit we don’t listen to that station so hopefully other sites will fight their corner but they certainly fit the remit of the BBC better than Moyles, so back them as well.
